Ever heard of the term Mental Health and not been sure why it is used and all the things it entails? Well, simply explained, one could think of it as the physical and physiological health of the brain. It includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being and affects how we think, feel, and act.
In our busy lifestyles today, it has become common practice to focus only on things that give or show immediate results: a financial project, a sudden physical injury or our general outward appearance. While all these things are important, we often tend to forget to pay attention to the small things that matter the most.
When trying to imagine the value of mental health think of your mind as the chain of a bicycle: if the chain is well-oiled, the overall experience of riding the bicycle will be much more rewarding and convenient. Similarly, keeping your mental health in check allows you to
- Work productively
- Realize your full potential
- Cope with the stresses of life
- Make meaningful contributions to community
Therefore, while keeping ourselves occupied with our day to day schedules let’s remember to ask ourselves: how are you feeling? And pay attention to any problematic thought patterns. Some of the other ways we could try and maintain positive mental health are:
- Connecting with others
- Keeping a positive mindset
- Getting physically active
- Helping out others
- Getting enough sleep
- Developing coping skills
- Getting professional help if needed
